This all stems from an experience David had a decade ago when his father was slain by Steelheart, not before giving the tyrant a significant injury.Īfter succeeding in contacting the shadowy anti-Epic group, David proves his worth to the Reckoners with his encyclopedic knowledge of every major Epic across the world. The story begins when wannabe Reckoner David Charleston devises a plan to defeat the Epic that has taken over Chicago, Steelheart. The Reckoners themselves don’t have powers and must rely on street smarts, firearms, and other forms of technology to take the Epics down. The three novels, Steelheart, Firefight, and Calamity, all center around a new city and new Epic for the titular Reckoners to take down. Instead of using their powers for good, these beings have created their own dictatorships in different cities in the United States. The Reckoners trilogy is set in a world where superpowered beings known as Epics have taken over the world. While Sanderson is more known for work in the fantasy genre, The Reckoners’ brand of superheroes is in line with his magically powered heroes seen in Mistborn. This trilogy is written by Brandon Sanderson, the author of Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy.
